WI at Hawkesbury Show

Afternoon Tea Parties

80th Anniversary Events

In 2018 our W.I. Table entry came 2nd at Hawkesbury Show with our interpretation of
'Alice in Wonderland'

Hawkesbury and Horton WI members can become involved in just as many activities as they wish. Some only want to attend our monthly meetings, as detailed in the varied programme shown alongside. As well as the meetings we also have:
A Walking Group on the third Tuesday of the month.
A Book Group on the second Tuesday evening of the month.
Craft Days - recent ones have been on felt making and on rag rugs. We have made wall hangings for the Village Hall and kneelers for local churches.
We have Trips and Outings - Recent ones have been to Kelmscott Manor, Owlpen Manor, a visit to see Calendar Girls at Bath Theatre Royal and going Dog Racing in Swindon.
For the Hawkesbury Show we enter a themed display table with cookery and craft items and of course, a carnival float or a walking group.
Many members feel able to involve themselves with local WIs in our group, which provides an easy way to broaden our horizons. Avon County Federation's activities are also popular, particularly the training days in crafts from calligraphy to quilling. A few of our members have been lucky enough to attend National Federation activities or even to stay at Denman College.

Whether involved locally or nationally, our members are often able to use WI activities to meet the challenge of making a difference in our community.

WI Life, the WI national magazine provides information on national campaigns, events and challenges.

National Campaigns, Events and Challenges WI members on carnival float

More details about National campaigns can be found in WI Life or the NFWI website.
The campaigns our WI has particularly focused on recently are:

Care Not Custody
The WI is campaigning for an end to the inappropriate detention of people with mental health problems, who would be better treated if diverted to hospitals or community based alternatives. We have written to our local MP and PCT to raise this issue further.

The programme of events for 2018 is detailed above and in recent years we have enjoyed a varied range of speakers, craft days and trips / outings. One of the most important community events locally is Hawkesbury Show, which is well supported by the W.I. each year, both in the Carnival procession and with a Show Table.

Our members become involved together in meeting challenges they have identified in our community. We have made wall hangings for Hawkesbury and Horton Village halls.

A millennium tapestry was instigated and now hangs in Hawkesbury Village Hall.

We have planted flowers around the village, acquired a grant towards a much-needed cooker for the village hall and raised money to provide new furniture for the Methodist Hall.

We often provide refreshments for local events, weddings and even street parties. We offer groups visiting local tourist attractions such as Westonbirt Arboretum or Highgrove afternoon tea in our village Methodist Hall.

Other challenges come in the form of Avon Federation activities such as the annual Quiz evening– where our team always does well. Recently, a Federation Sports day was held where our treasurer came away bearing not one, but two awards!

Afternoon Tea Parties

If you are visiting the Cotswolds, Westonbirt Arboretum, Bath, Durham Park etc. or organising a Mystery Tour in the surrounding area then make your day complete with afternoon tea prepared by the WI in the village of Hawkesbury Upton.
Contact teaparties@hawkesburyandhortonwi.org.uk for further details.
